It’s not a usual thing that I am at a lose for words. Or unable to form a complete opinion about something. Quite the opposite usually. I am always quick with my thoughts and how I feel on things. These new F1 rules however have me flabbergasted and at a complete loss. The idea of refueling brings back a new aspect of strategy, but I also remember the pitiful amount of on track passing that happened. The idea of teams choosing their own tires is interesting, but Pirelli said that this would not happen under their watch. A new tire war sounds interesting, but I can’t help but worry that it will all turn back into the early 2000’s. The aero changes seem interesting, but again, will passing become more rare? And what of the hushed rumors that customer cars are finally happening? I have no idea what to really think yet, and your opinions and a good discussion I think would really help me out. And as always, I will have my F1 column up at Hooniverse on Monday

They’re going to up the downforce levels, so I’m already against them. Passing is impossible because of dirty air. More aero just makes that worse. Ban wings and get rid of the flat floor rule.

I watch the whole weekend so on track passes are just a bonus. I don’t mind a parade as long as the order of the parade is decided by strategists, engineers, and drivers who all do their jobs. I prefer the battles won by tactical choices for the weekend and strategic choices for the championship. The refueling and tire selection help the former, while the latter is still hampered by design freezes and lack of testing.

I know I’m in the minority based on the comments I’ve seen, but I like the change all around.

I hope we never see the days of customer cars in F1. Look what happened to CART/Indy Car. F1 is going down a slippery slope and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens, especially with the historic European tracks.

IMO all that needed to be done (on top of the now added RPM and better tires) was to remove fuel usage limits.

Doesnt the FIA realize that: More freight + more weight = more fuel use?

Why is refueling necessary in an F1 attempting to limit their fuel consumption?

They had customer cars back in the 70s

Noted, and a good point. Just hoping we don’t see a slow demise to the pinnacle of motorsport.

These rule changes are directed primarily at/for the viewer audience. They are the people who buy the tickets and the world-wide audience that watches from afar that pays the bills.

Also, the teams and would-be teams and sponsors who consider coming/staying in the sport

With Michelin maybe entering the tire war, we should see better competition. (forget the F-1 Indy/US Grand Prix) race some years ago or the Hoosier/Goodyear battle in NASCAR a number of years ago).

Reintroduction of refueling. What a concept. All other series do it. It adds to the drama.

Higher revving engines with more sound. Is that not what most love F-1 for?

Faster lap times through better aero. Is that bad?

Last but not least, Customer cars. Ultimate benefit. Would-be teams, who can’t spend hundreds of millions to design an F-1 car are able to participate in the sport and the developers would be able to recoup some of their costs.

The sustainability of the sport is now becoming critical. There has to be changes to bring back sponsors and the public.

Win for all.

One issue I have with the comparison people are making with pre-2009 passing (refueling) and post-2009 (no refueling) is that people seem to be forgetting that, around 2009, F1 was really beginning to bring DRS and Kers to the fore at that point, which inherently allows for more passing. It's not an equivalent comparison that is being made.

It seems like fuel saving is no more, which is troubling as it begs the question if these new engines were worth it at all

I mean, if you’re trying to reflect the new evolutions in hybrid technology, and try to start yelling, “Hey World Endurance Championship, we’re still relevant to the road (even though Audi used hybrid tech in the R18 2-3 years before we did)!”, why would you try to contradict yourself? Goddamnit Bernie
